Our Story

How We Started

2019

The Osana Foundation started out of a need and with prayer. In 2014, I returned to Trinidad with my adult son who has autism. There were no programs, no social support systems to assist him in the community. There were three other children who were diagnosed with autism, two of whom were not attending school. There was also one adolescent with Down Syndrome and she was attending a pre- school. Her mom had to work and she needed to be supervised. So seeing the need, I was moved to compassion and decided to do something about it.

I renovated my garage and changed it into a learning center. On 26th July, 2019 Osana was registered as an NGO and we started The Osana Day Training Center in September 2019 with 5 participants.

2026

Almost seven years later Osana continues to impact the lives of the differently abled children and adolescents in our community. We survived Covid with online classes for our children.

Today we have 15 registered participants with 2 age groups in our day program. Pre school, school aged children and adolescents. Some of our children have transitioned into main stream and we are so proud of this accomplishment.

We meet 5 days a week, Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 3:00pm and we follow the Ministry of Education’s Calendar Schedule. Students can be dropped off at 8:15 am and we also have early drop off services for a fee. Children can be picked up from 2:30pm in the afternoon and there is a late fee for late pick up. Our classes are small and individualized with a ratio of 6 to 1.

Our staff is comprised of Program Director, three classroom instructors and one agriculture instructor. Professionals Make up our Board of Directors and we are thankful for the support, advice, recommendations and training that they give.

We are also thankful for our Speech Therapist Ms. Tenille St. Louis, who has been providing on line communication development sessions with our instructors and participants. She is indeed a blessing! Osana is thankful to Almighty God, Supporters, Parents, Staff, Board, Community and of course, our Participants.

Bernice JacquesProgram Director
I am a mother who has an adult son, with autism. I have been an educator for several years and because of Almighty God, love and compassion Osana was founded. Our special children have been left behind, yes but they are not forgotten. So, by the grace of God, dedicated staff, a competent board and supporters, we try to provide a safe, nurturing and learning environment for our differently abled children. With hard work and dedication our children continue to thrive and for this we are so thankful.
Shyan Johnson
I, Shyan Johnson, started working at the OSANA Foundation in January 2023. Before joining the team, I earned qualifications in English, Agricultural Science, and Art and Craft, which have helped shape my skills and creativity. I also have hands-on experience as a babysitter and domestic worker, which taught me patience, responsibility, and care. In 2018, I became certified in paper jewelry craft, and earlier on, I participated in the Carnival Arts and Life Skills Vacation Camp held on August 23, 2013, which helped develop my artistic and interpersonal skills even further
Darcell Charles
Growing up as a child, I have always wanted to be a nurse. However, life had a different plan for me. Somehow I developed the need to care for young children, so much so that I sometimes refer to it as my calling. Not special needs children specifically, but children. Nevertheless, when applied to be an instructor for the kids at Osana, I never thought it will be this fulfilling.
